legion

I’m very picky with the movies I watch and make sure I lurk around the internet to get a mild idea on what a film is about before willing myself to purchase a ticket. 95% of the movies I have seen so far were decent, some brilliant… at least, in my own opinion. The remaining 5% were results of bad judgment or because my friends wanted me to come see the movie with them.

In this case, for 2010 movie Legion, it was the latter. The moment I saw the trailer, I knew immediately that it wasn’t my cup of tea simply because it had 3 things that I don’t like seeing in movies.

So the other day, lonely lil me watched 500 Days of Summer and Astroboy back-to-back all by myself in Glorietta. All I’ve got to say is that both movies were brilliant.

I love how 500 days was made that it wasn’t really a love story. I love both of the main characters. And Astroboy was also so nice that I watched it twice. The 2nd time, I was with friends who seeing it for the first time.

October 30, 2009 was a Hands Down day for so many reasons that I wont even explain here. =)

Fame 2009 movie poster

Fame opened today in Manila. I need to watch this A-SAP! I’m a big sucker of movies that has a ‘pursue your dreams‘ plot cause it just pierces through me. Lol. I’m such a pussy.

There are two types of movies that I can’t ever bring myself to watch–one of which are supense thrillers. One good reason is because I’m too jumpy. With the proper lighting, or the lack of it, inside the theater and sound effects, you could totally expect to see me scream like a girl at one or more parts in a movie. Second, I’m not particularly fond of watching people get brutally murdered one by one after several minutes of teasing whether a character would get killed. So imagine my horror when a friend asked us to watch The Orphan to celebrate her birthday. Since I came to her birthday celebration sans any presents, I figured that seating through 2 hours of this film is the least I could do.

One of the things I wouldn’t mind admitting right off the bat is that I’m a big wuss. If a guy (or girl) challenges me to a fight, I would immediately say “Are you friggin’ kidding me?!? It’s too much work to just get beaten up in the end“. So to no surprise, my first girly scream came 15 minutes into the film… and the scene wasn’t even scary. I blame it on the sound effects. Come another 15 minutes and I was already sitting on the floor with my head on the theater seat and hiding behind my bag with my iPod plugged in my hear.

By the time the first character was murdered, I grabbed my copy of a David Sedaris book and stormed out of the cinema. I texted my friends to just get my bag out with them once the movie is through because there is no way I am coming back inside. During the remaining hour of the movie, I hung out at the 6th floor parking lot (which was conveniently beside the cinema) and continued my happy reading of Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim which was, to me, a lot better than watching a bunch of people get killed by a kid.

coraline

Being a Neil Gaiman fan, I was excited to finally see Coraline last night (thanks to Aia for giving me a copy), since it’s not being shown here in the Philippines. It was OK. I mean, nothing beats Mirrormask, in my opinion, so this was just decent.

Again, the story was different from the graphic novel. So much that there’s even a new character that wasn’t in the novel. Certain scenes were added as well. However, it brought another level of creepiness. The graphic novel was all kinds of creepy because the illustrations were not as ‘comical’ as it was on the movie. Maybe because, I watched it late in the night that I found some parts eerie.

I’m still in awe on how stop-motion movies are painstakingly done. It’s just amazing at just how much work and dedication went to this.

This is a very late post/review regarding Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince considering I saw the film (twice!) last week. Being a big fan of the books, I’d say that I enjoyed watching the movie even though I heard a lot of people didn’t.

I’ve been disappointed with previous HP films because they didn’t follow certain details and show certain scenes from the book, therefore missing a bunch of stuff that I loved about the book. This time around, I decided to take it for what it is–just a movie adaptation. These type of movies rarely stay 100% faithful to the books so my expectations were different.

I guess, I just wanted to see the story materialize instead of just realying on my imagination. And the visuals did not disappoint, not even the part where it started looking like it was taken a Lord of The Rings movie, with countless Gollum look-alikes even.

Did anybody else tear up during Dumbledore’s scene at the end where everyone was on the school grounds lighting their wands up? No? Uhhh… me, too. =P

And my love for Luna Lovegood’s character, both from movie and book, was satisfied. She’s closely becoming my favorite character next to Ron Weasley. Oh, and I want that hat!

Holy frakking batman! Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will start showing tomorrow! I will be watching on Saturday with my friends, though. But if can’t contain myself, I might see it tomorrow night with another friend after work then go see it another time on Saturday.

This is making me buy all 7 books since I’ve always borrowed copies from my friends. (Wait… I remember buying Order of the Phoenix and lending it to a friend… I forgot who.)

cormac

To the little girls and gays out there, watch out for new character Cormac McLaggen played by Freddie Stroma.

So the other night, I watched the original Japanese version of Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea because a friend told me that it was already available. Being abig fan of Hayao Miyazaki and his wonderful animations, I just had to see it as soon as possible.

However, after watching it, I was a bit underwhelmed. I did not like the last quarter at all. It wasvery anti-climactic. Undoubtedly, the animation was superb, but the storyline was kind of lacking, in my opinion. It didn’t leave the same sweet and spicy taste that the other Ghibli films have left.

Maybe it was because I had high expectations from a Studio Ghibli film. For me, though, nothing tops Spirited Away! I’d give this one 3 stars.

This is Johnny Depp starring as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s upcoming adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. As with every Tim Burton film, especially those with Depp, this is going to be oh-so-awesome. I can’t wait to hear more about this film and from the looks of the screencaps, I’m going to have bucketloads of visual orgasms.

Also in this movie are Helena Bonham-Carter as the Queen of Hearts and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Click on the image to see more photos via Coming Soon.

Coming soon in theaters is another one of my highly anticipated movies this year. Where The Wild Things Are is a movie that was adapted from a very popular children’s book and will hit the big screen on October 16 of this year. Even though I haven’t read the actual book, the moment I saw the trailer a few months ago off some other blog, I immediately fell in love with it. I think that it is going to have a very nice concept and I might even cry at the end… which I usually do.

The picture book was both written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak and was originally meant to show horses instead of monsters. He later changed it because he realized he couldn’t draw horses. Lol.

You can watch the trailer here. For some reason, they have disabled embedding of this particular trailer on YouTube.
